Welcome to Schiff Hardin! We have been successful over the last 150 years for many reasons: our shared commitment to professional and personal excellence and integrity; our dedication to outstanding client service; our involvement in the legal community and the broader communities where we live and work; and our understanding that everyone here is critical to our success.

Our staff provides a full range of services in the following departments: Accounting, Human Resources & Benefits, Information Technology Services, Library, Paralegals, Project Assistants, Secretarial Services and Administrative Support, Marketing, Lateral Recruitment, Legal Recruiting & Professional Development.

We believe in professional dedication, responsiveness, and service and hold everyone here to these high standards. We encourage teamwork, ongoing training, career development, and respect for colleagues at every level.

We work hard to promote diversity and inclusion at our firm, in the legal profession, and in our communities. Several organizations have recently – and repeatedly – recognized our efforts. Read more about the firm's diversity initiatives here.

We are committed to serving the communities in which we live and work. Each year the firm – lawyers and staff – chooses organizations to support. Our ACT (All Come Together) initiative provides opportunities for meaningful volunteerism throughout the year. Read more about the firm’s Citizenship activities here.

Schiff Hardin offers a wide array of administrative staff employment opportunities to people with professional integrity, exemplary work ethics, and high standards.

  • Firm Culture and Benefits

We know that our work is demanding, but we also want it to be a means for people here to attain their personal and professional goals. We put that objective into practice with benefits and policies including the following:

    Generous Benefits Program

Because we all have different needs that influence the choices we make every day, we provide you with the freedom to select quality benefit options that work best for you. Our comprehensive Benefits Program includes medical, dental, life insurance, disability, flexible spending accounts (health care, dependent care and commuter), and our professional retirement and 401(k) plan, holidays, vacation and sick time. We also offer health care benefits to both same-sex and opposite-sex domestic partners. You must satisfy the eligibility provisions of the applicable plans in order to participate. Click here for a summary of this year’s benefits.

    Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The EAP is provided by the Firm at no cost to you. The program offers you and your family confidential counseling and coaching to address many life-balance, health, and career issues. You can meet with a counselor face-to-face, by appointment, or call to receive help at any time. In addition, we make available e-Learning, interactive tools, health and wellness assessments, and a library of health, life balance, and workplace articles.

    Back-Up Dependent Care Program

This program provides our people with a safety net for days when regular dependent care arrangements (for children or ill or elderly adults) fall through. Employees use the program during center/school closings for holidays and breaks, regular caregivers’ sick or vacation days, family members’ recovery from an illness or surgery, or the transition to new care arrangements. Schiff Hardin subsidizes the care.

    Wellness Program

We encourage all employees to participate in annual on-site health screenings. The firm also provides AED/CPR training, free on-site flu shots, and reimbursement for smoking cessation and weight management programs.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a staff position?

We post positions that are available to external candidates here. Applicants must submit resumes online. After we receive an application, we will follow up by email.

When and how will I hear if I am being considered for the position?

We will try to notify you either by email or a phone call within five business days after your initial submission if we are considering you for the position.

Do you offer job shadowing or short-term work experience?

We do not currently offer this experience.

Does Schiff Hardin conduct background checks?

Yes, we perform background checks on all new hires before they start. A typical background check will verify employment and education and include a criminal record check. We may also perform a credit check for certain positions.

Does Schiff Hardin offer health care coverage?

Yes. Please see our Generous Benefits Program section.

Where can I learn about the job requirements for a position?

To understand specific skills you need for a particular position, we recommend that you search for the position(s) that interest you and review the job posting.

Does Schiff Hardin pay competitive salaries?

Yes. We consult various law firm-specific salary surveys to determine current market data. If you are interested in learning more about salary levels generally, you may want to check the following sources:

    • Payscale.com

    • Monster.com Salary Wizard

    • glassdoor.com

    • Vault survey data

What is the rehire process for former Schiff Hardin employees?

We follow the same application process for a former employee that we follow for other candidates. Visit our search tool to find open positions that match your experience.

Also, if you still have friends working here, you might want to contact them and ask them to submit your name through our Employee Referral program.

Will I have opportunities for training and development after I am hired?

Yes. We value training and development and encourage our employees to seek internal and external opportunities for professional development and to discuss them with their manager.

Tell me about the Schiff Hardin interview process?

The interview process typically begins with a phone interview with a recruiter. That interview is sometimes followed by a conversation with a member of the team with an open position.

The interview with your recruiter tends to focus on your experience and interests, while the interview with a team member is more technical, or skills-based.

After these interviews, we may invite you for a callback interview, either on-site at a Schiff Hardin location or at a location near you via video conference. During these interviews, you will meet one-on-one with several employees in the hiring group. Each interview lasts about 45 minutes. An interviewer may be a peer or a manager.

We try to reach a hiring decision within five business days after the final interview has taken place, but please ask your recruiter for a better understanding of our timeframe.

I have an upcoming interview. What should I wear?

Please ask your recruiter for advice. Your interview dress depends on the type of job and group with which you are interviewing. Typically, we recommend you wear “business casual” dress — clothes that are appropriate for the workplace but also comfortable.

Where can I ask additional questions?

If our website does not answer all of your questions, please email us at hrandbenefits@schiffhardin.com. You can also check out our LinkedIn page for more information.

One thing I enjoy about working in the DC office is the congeniality of the staff and the attorneys. This congeniality goes a long way to making work pleasant. I also enjoy the cultural and ethnic diversity. When someone asks me where I work, I am proud to say ‘Schiff Hardin LLP.’
