Schiff Hardin Adds White Collar Defense Lawyer William Ziegelmueller in Chicago

News Release |

Schiff Hardin LLP today announced that William P. Ziegelmueller has joined the firm as a partner in its Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice in Chicago, effective immediately.

Ziegelmueller is an experienced trial lawyer who represents individual and corporate clients in federal criminal investigations, regulatory enforcement actions, civil litigation, and corporate internal investigations. He represents individuals and corporations accused of alleged wrongdoing, such as fraud, political corruption, tax evasion, extortion, bribery, foreign corrupt practices, and antitrust violations.

He has extensive experience handling complex trials and high-profile matters, such as representing Antoin Rezko, an advisor to former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, in a three-month trial in Chicago. During a four-month trial in New York, he represented a former attorney at the now-defunct law firm of Jenkins & Gilchrist who was charged with developing complex tax shelters promoted by major law firms, banks, and brokerage houses.

“Bill is a seasoned white collar criminal lawyer with a broad range of trial experience in federal appellate and district courts nationwide,” said Antony Burt, Litigation and Dispute Resolution group co-leader at Schiff Hardin. “His addition enhances our already strong litigation capabilities, particularly in advising clients on a wide range of regulatory and compliance matters in highly regulated industries.”

Ziegelmueller defends clients involved in investigations and enforcement actions conducted by the SEC, IRS, CFTC, OCC, ICE, FDA, USDA, and other regulatory agencies. He frequently advises health care providers and industry executives in responding to government audits and subpoenas, and, if necessary, in litigating civil or criminal charges. He played key roles in two nationally significant healthcare prosecutions: the TAP Pharmaceuticals case and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois case, both of which resulted in the acquittal of all defendants after lengthy trials.

Ziegelmueller’s civil litigation background includes a range of executive employment and compensation disputes, unfair competition and corporate breach of contract cases, and insurance matters

“Schiff Hardin provides a broad national platform for complex litigation, and I am excited to join its team of exceptional lawyers,” Ziegelmueller said.

Ziegelmueller comes to Schiff Hardin from Chicago litigation boutique Stetler, Duffy & Rotert, Ltd. A magna cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University, Ziegelmueller earned his law degree from Northwestern University, where he served as coordinating note editor of the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology.
